Five people have been arrested following a massive gun bust by members of the Metropolitan Police Department's Violent Crime Suppression Division, who got an unlikely assist from one of the suspects.

Over the weekend, officers on patrol spotted a man with a weapon, though when they attempted to stop him, he ignored their commands and he fled into a nearby apartment in Southeast DC, which led to a surprise for investigators.

Once inside, police say that the officers spotted several weapons in plain view, and a subsequent search of the apartment led to the seizure of nine handguns, two privately made AR-style pistols, 200 rounds of ammunition, and drugs.

Those arrested: Southeast DC residents Melvin Richardson, 30, Andrew Carter, 21, Trikivis Hunter, 21, Northeast resident Quoron Green, 19, and 20-year-old Kevin Hankins of Germantown, Maryland.

Each is facing a host of weapons charges that include:

  • Possession of an unregistered firearm;
  • Possession of unregistered ammunition;
  • Possession of a large-capacity ammunition feeding device;
  • Possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance.

No information about their next court appearances has been released by the department.
